SOLO EXHIBITION “THE FORMLESS”| ARTIST HUYNH QUANG CUONG
.Phuong Mai Gallery is delighted to present The Formless, the fourth solo exhibition by artist Huynh Quang Cuong. After more than three decades of painting and exploring various forms of artistic expression, the artist presents a series of abstract works for the first time, continuing a creative journey inspired by nature, rural landscapes, and fragments of everyday life.
In this new series, familiar imagery is no longer confined to recognisable forms, but is distilled through colour, lines, and layers of material. From boats and flowing waters to rising waves and contours reminiscent of hills and mountains, these images give rise to shifting associations, bringing the familiar into dialogue with the vast, and the tangible closer to what lies beyond grasp. From this emerges the concept of The Formless, not as two opposing states, but as an ongoing process of transformation within painting.
A form emerges as tones and lines converge… Form. Then it gradually fades, losing the appearance we had just recognized… Formlessness. From the areas of color that continue to transform, another form appears… Form. And so it continues: Form into Formlessness… Formlessness into Form… in an unending succession. There is no final shape, nor any emptiness that closes off all possibilities of coming into being.
