A night in the life of an artist, rendered in oil

HCMCITY– “Un-concentration” is the unusually named theme of La Như Lan’s solo exhibition that depicts one night-time of thinking and feeling.
The 20 works’ titles include the name of hours, from 11:45pm to 5:00am, the time period in which Lan painted the works.
“Lan’s nocturnal pictures are not so dark but are actually colourful, even though he is expressing loneliness or a cry at night. The sky is full of bright stars, and the sweet memories are poetic,” one viewer said. Born in 1975 in an artists’ family, he is the youngest child of three siblings. His father is La Hon, a well-known artist in Viet Nam.
Lan followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a professional artist whose paintings are in art collections around the world.
He is also a lecturer at HCMCity’s Culture and ArtCollege and at HongBangUniversity.
“Ever since I was a little boy, I was aware of the fine arts through my father. I also have an aptitude for art, so I chose it,” Lan said.
He began with oil painting in 1999 when he was a junior at university and continued because he “could pour myself into my drawings.”

by artists like Picasso, has a new solo exhibition

“Abstraction and symbolisation are the two schools which I like best. When I began to draw, I liked several artists and I was affected by some of them, especially Picasso,” Lan added.
