I. Introduction to Artist Ho Huu Thu
Artist Ho Huu Thu was born in 1942 in Nghe An Province, Vietnam. With his innate talent, he soon established his position in the Vietnamese art scene. In 1964, he officially graduated from the Saigon National College of Fine Arts. He later remained associated with the institution as a professor and lecturer before 1975. Sadly, the great artist passed away on September 9, 2024. However, his immense artistic legacy continues to live on.
II. Prestigious Art Awards
Thanks to his groundbreaking artistic thinking and masterful technique, he continuously received numerous major awards throughout his career:
- 1960: Won the silver medal at the ESSO Fine Arts Competition at a very young age.
- 1990: Received Second Prize at the prestigious National Fine Arts Competition.
Today, national archival institutions proudly display selected works from his collection. Among them, the most notable are the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi and the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts.
III. Notable Exhibition Journey
Ho Huu Thu’s career was closely associated with numerous significant exhibitions. These events took place both domestically and internationally:
1. Early Career and the Formation of His Artistic Style (1963 – 1994)
- 1963 – 1974: He actively participated in the annual exhibitions organized by the Young Artists Association.
- 1972: Successfully held his first solo exhibition at ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE SAIGON.
- 1992: Presented his works at ASIAN MASTER GALLERY BHD. At the same time, he participated in the “ART & MATERIALS ’92” event at the National Museum of Singapore.
- 1993: Participated in the “NEW SPACE” cultural exchange project between Vietnamese and Singaporean artists.
- 1994: Made a notable impression in France at L’ESPACE JACQUES PRÉVERT, Dunkerque City’s Hall, and Gallery Bellin. In addition, he participated in the “ASIAN-VIETNAM INTERNATIONAL MODERN ART” exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Breakthrough and International Recognition (1996 – 2009)
- 1996: Exhibited his paintings at FUJITA VENTE ART MUSEUM in Japan. He subsequently participated in the second “Asian-Vietnam International Modern Art” exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City.
- 2000: Presented his works at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Art. Furthermore, he expanded his international presence to the United States, exhibiting in Golden, Colorado, and at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center in California.
- 2001: Participated in the “Vietnam-Japan Art” cultural exchange event at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts.
- 2002: Participated in the prestigious “EPIC” exhibition at Gajah Gallery in Singapore.
- 2005: Co-organized a group exhibition with Vanessa Art Link in Jakarta, Indonesia.
- 2006: Collaborated with Brigitte Art Gallery on a group exhibition in the United States.
- 2009: Participated in a group exhibition with four Saigon artists at Phuong Mai Gallery.
